CHIP Reverse Mortgage
"The reverse mortgage like any other product must fit into the financial goals of a client. For example, if an elderly client would like to gift the house to their kids afterwards, then a reverse mortgage may not the right idea."

Talking Professionalism
"You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. Same thing applies with disclosure to clients. You give them a prospectus, ear marked it etc., and they don't read it! When does it stop being our responsibility to make sure our clients read?"

The Profile Matrix, a four-page graphic representation of the Competency Profile inserted inside the back cover of the larger document, can be used to show your clients and prospective clients what it takes to be a financial planning professional. As one planner who ordered extra copies of the Profile Matrix noted, "This would appear to be an excellent 'third party' influence piece to give to new clients along with my CV and disclosure statements." The Competency Profile was included with your recent FPSC Bulletin mailing. To order additional copies of the Profile Matrix use our Order Form.

Interested in helping develop the CFP Examination? Then FPSC wants you! We're holding several two-day workshops across Canada to train CFP professionals in the art and science of examination item writing. We invite interested individuals to apply to attend the workshop. Those accepted will be trained and offered a contract to develop examination items independently. Visit the Volunteer Opportunities section of our website for more information and to apply.

It has been said that professionals "profess a commitment to competence, integrity and morality, altruism, and the promotion of the public good within their domain." first-time homebuyers. "Use a notebook to record your wish list…This is your list, so consider everything that is important to you and take it with you on your home search."

Thank you CFP professionals who volunteer time to complete FPSC brand ambassador training and to participate in our branding campaigns.

Here are a few of the ways we're all spreading the word:

Promoting CFP Certification

FPSC Director, Professional & Student Affairs Carolyn Fallis CA, CFP, and FPSC Public Relations Specialist Heather Mills attended a career fair at Fanshawe College in London, ON on Tuesday, February 13th.

CFP professionals Anna Chan and Anthony Windeyer joined FPSC Public Relations Specialist Heather Mills on March 2 in Vancouver at a career fair co-sponsored by Simon Fraser University and University of British Columbia.

On March 7, CFP professional Gordon Ross represented FPSC in Calgary at Mount Royal College's career fair.

At a career fair held at the Scarborough campus of the University of Toronto on March 12, FPSC Public Relations Specialist Heather Mills spoke to a number of business administration students.

Corporate and Community Outreach

FPSC staff attended several events during January and February promoting our 'Speaking of Money' initiative that puts volunteering CFP professionals in front of audiences to open their eyes to the merits of financial planning — where to begin, how to start and whose advice to seek.

In late January/early February, we took our booth to the Ontario Library Association (OLA) conference and to the Human Resources Professionals Association of Ontario (HRPAO) conference, both held in Toronto. Later in February, we were one of few select groups represented at the Top Employers Summit also held in Toronto.

The CFP credential after your name shows your commitment to professionalism in financial planning. You worked hard for it, so make sure it is given the proper attribution, whether it is in an article or in your e-mail signature — wherever your name appears.

In the winter edition of FPSC Bulletin, we told you about an organization in New Brunswick that developed a program to help parents plan care of children with disabilities. Based on the article, a number of planners from across the country have contacted the New Brunswick Association of Community Living wanting more information. Nice to know you are reading the bulletin.

A number of organizations where you may hold credentials or of which you may be a member recently made changes to their CE requirements and the pre-approval of CE activities.

Although these CE activities may meet your CFP CE requirements, remember that FPSC does not pre-approve CE activities at this time nor do we rely on the assessments of other organizations. We will only review and/or approve activities when we conduct our annual random audits.

As a CFP professional and/or licensing candidate, it's your responsibility to ensure your reported activities meet FPSC's CE Guidelines and that you continue to rely on your own self-assessment when reporting your CE activities. Visit our website for the comprehensive CE Requirements and
CFP Examination Syllabus.

For additional information and/or further clarification, please contact Sheila Catahan, Professional Practice Analyst, at scatahan@cfp-ca.org.

Have any good financial planning tips to pass on to the public? Send them to us and we will publish them on our website. Tips can be general in nature, time-tested truths, or more specific and current in relevance such as ideas on how to take advantage of the new Children's Fitness Tax Credit proposed in the recent federal budget. Send your tips to communications@cfp-ca.org. Your name and e-mail will be in included if your tip is published.

We list third-party events on the FPSC website that may satisfy some of your Continuing Education requirements. The Event and Seminar Calendar is updated regularly so check back often. If you know of events not listed that may be of interest to your colleagues, e-mail us at communications@cfp-ca.org.
