Providing the definition and vision of professional financial planning in Canada for the foreseeable future, FPSC publishes its new CFP Professional Competency Profile. Visit the CFP professionals' hub of the FPSC website and look under CFP Standards, Requirements & Policies to view this comprehensive document that clearly defines the multi-dimensional and integrative nature of professional financial planning, and how financial planning differs from other kinds of financial advice and service.

Look for a print version with the winter edition of FPSC Bulletin coming to you in February.

Last month, John De Goey's hosting of the Discussion Forum thread about industry professionalism was very successful in prompting a lively discussion. Tracy Piercy CFP is now sharing her equally provocative thoughts on the industry's obligation to help educate consumers. Here is one comment she has posted: "There are unfortunately too many advisors who only know how to look at the current numbers and the existing situation and while they have good intentions, they are not trained or equipped to help clients brainstorm creative and alternate solutions."

Care to discuss it? Access the forum from a special link on the CFP Professionals' homepage. Piercy hosts the discussion thread until December 15.

Current Postings:
"I agree we need to educate our clients, but first we need to educate our industry. This level of compliance is to prevent the vast majority from doing something that only the very small minority would ever even consider doing — creating harm to a client."

"The numbers tell us that people spend more time shopping for a pair of jeans than they do planning their annual RSP contributions. So how do we fix that?"

"I guess my frustration is that I do not feel I should have to "babysit" clients and make sure that they read the info. I tell them where the info is to be found, I tell them the fees involved; what more do I have to do?"

On September 22, FPSC sent a letter to the U.S. CFP Board of Standards explaining our thoughts on the proposed revisions to their Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility and Financial Planning Practice Standards. Read our letter on our website as well as the CFP Board's proposed revisions.

And on October 17, we responded to the Financial Services Commission of Ontario's review of proficiency requirements for Mortgage Agents/Brokers. Read our letter on our website and visit the mortgage brokers and agents education review homepage.

Acting FPSC President Cary List CA, CFP was elected to the board of the National Organization for Competency Assurance (NOCA), the American association for professional certification bodies, for an initial three-year term effective immediately. He is the first non-American NOCA Board member.

At the NOCA conference in Orlando in November, List co-presented a session on "Competency-based Assessment" to approximately 100 attendees. The session focused on the advantages and disadvantages of taking a competency-based approach to certification.

List also sat on two discussion panels at the International Financial Planning Day event in Hong Kong this fall — one on financial planning and the CFP credential around the world and the other on "Client Advising Techniques." He sat on a similar international discussion panel at China's first convocation ceremony and international conference for CFP professionals in Shenzen, China. FPSC Past Chair Margaret Koniuck gave a talk on "personal branding" at this conference.

At the fall 2007 Financial Planning Standards Board (FPSB) Council meetings in Hong Kong, Indonesia was approved as a full member of FPSB, the organization of CFP certifying bodies from around the world. Indonesia joined as an associate member at the meetings held in Vancouver this past spring.

FPSB is the non-profit association that owns and manages the CFP certification program outside the United States. FPSC past chair Margaret Koniuck is the 2007 FPSB Board chair and current FPSC Board chair Peter Volpé is an FPSB Board member.

The CFP Code of Ethics helps distinguish you from other financial professionals. We've created a one-page poster listing and describing the tenets included in the Code for you to frame and display in your place of business. Download the 8 ½"x11" PDF off our website in Our Marketing Support.

Submit your nomination for the 2007 Donald J. Johnston Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Profession of Financial Planning in Canada (Donald J. Johnston Award) by December 20th at www.cfp-ca.org/djaward. Nominees should be individuals or a group who are making or have made a significant contribution to the financial planning profession in Canada through a unique achievement or outstanding service.

The annual Donald J. Johnston Award honours in perpetuity, the spirit, imagination, dedication and contribution exemplified by FPSC's founding CEO, the first recipient of the award that bears his name. As part of the award, FPSC donates $10,000 to the charity of the annual recipient's choice.

Visit www.cfp-ca.org/djaward for more information and/or to submit a nomination.

Thank you CFP professionals who volunteer time to complete FPSC brand ambassador training and to participate in our branding campaigns.
