To help keep apace of the growing demand for financial planning seminars, FPSC has launched a new program called Speaking of Money. The goal is to help as many Canadians as possible benefit from knowing more about financial planning and about the value of engaging the services of CFP professionals.

How can CFP professionals get involved? Spread the word about the benefits of holding financial planning seminars to special interest, business and other groups in your community. Volunteer your services or direct the group organizers to FPSC if they're interested. If you speak at an event, let FPSC know and share your experience with your CFP colleagues on the FPSC Discussion Forum for CFP Professionals at www.cfp-ca.org.

Visit the Speaking of Money section of our website for more information or contact us at fpseminars@cfp-ca.org.

To help CFP professionals share ideas with their colleagues, FPSC facilitates a password protected online discussion forum for CFP professionals at www.cfp-ca.org. But sometimes constructive conversations need a little prodding. We're looking for CFP professionals with particular expertise to lead discussions on the forum and provide valuable insight to their fellow financial planners. Our recent guest hosts discussed professionalism in the industry and the industry's responsibility to educate the public. Both generated a great discussion and varying opinions. If hosting a discussion thread is something you'd be interested in, contact Blake Glendenning at bglendenning@cfp-ca.org for more information.

Recent Postings:

Non-Solicitation Clause
"A recent decision out of the B.C. Court of Appeal has paved the way for financial planners to take their book of business with them. In summary, a financial planner is allowed to contact their clients when changing firms as 'the relationship is with the planner and not the firm'."

Talking Professionalism
"If you took a passive portfolio, which would have MERs of less than 100 basis points, and added your fee on top, you then would come out with an entirely different look. In fact, you would be saving your clients close to 100 basis points or more in the overall MER. A fee for service model would be best suited where the company you are choosing your products from have very low MERs. Any thoughts?"

A recent Ipsos-Reid poll conducted for Sympatico.msn.ca determined financial planning was the big riser in trustworthiness from 2002 to 2006. In 2002, financial planning ranked 20th. In the poll conducted in late December 2006, financial planning ranked 9th. And of note in the rankings, financial planning and investment advising were viewed as two distinct professions. Read the press release from Ipsos-Reid at www.ipsos-na.com/news/pressrelease.cfm?id=3333.

We're making the switch on all our registered marks (CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANICAL PLANNER®, and the CFP flame logo). Over time, you'll see the switch on our printed and electronic materials and we hope to see it in on all of yours as well. Start right away on your electronic use of the marks, such as on your website, but for your printed material you can wait until it's time to re-print. Contact FPSC Communications to receive the updated logo.

In the February Feature Article, Reverse Mortgages, Joyce Smith CFP, CGA discusses this much advertised way for seniors to use the equity in their home. "Reverse mortgages can be a useful tool for seniors who have built up equity in their home and are looking to supplement their cash flow in retirement, but they are not for everyone."
