The October Reader's Digest will feature an article about the CFP credential. The article includes basic information about the importance of financial planning during all life stages, seeking a CFP professional for financial planning advice and the rigorous standards set by FPSC to which you have met and currently adhere. FPSC encourages you to read the article and mention it to your colleagues and clients. FPSC was contacted by Reader's Digest staff who were interested in writing an article about financial planning to accompany financial planning related advertising. FPSC communications department had the opportunity to assist in providing content.

CFP Ambassadors continue to put their best foot forward in media interviews on a variety of topics. "Love is in the Air" — with the focus on financial planning for newlyweds — an advisory we issued in June, generated a great deal of media interest.

Congratulations and thank you to all who helped spread the word and educated Canadians on the many facets of financial planning during June and July.

If we've missed your name this time, send us an e-mail to let us know of your participation in media interviews (outside of those we arrange) so we can acknowledge you and celebrate the success with you and your peers.

We asked you in 1999 — and again in 2002. Now we're preparing another survey to explore the public's perception of financial planning. Do your clients understand what financial planning encompasses? Or do they still believe the common misconceptions? We want your input. Watch for an E-Special announcement in September with a link to the electronic survey. For now, look at the misconceptions identified in our last survey and let us know if there are any others we can add to the list for our upcoming survey. E-mail your suggestions to communications@cfp-ca.org.

Each year, Advisor.ca and Advisor's Edge magazine recognize outstanding advisors from across the country with the Advisor of the Year Awards. And each year the majority of the winners and honourable mentions are CFP professionals. Let's make it a clean sweep this year.

Planners and advisors from across the country are invited to submit a case study that exemplifies their skills in one of five categories — Best Insurance Solution, Best Investment Solution, Best Tax Solution, Best Standard Financial Plan and Best Advanced Financial Plan.

The deadline for entries is September 30, 2005. Visit advisor.ca and click on the Advisor of the Year Awards logo for more information.

The Feature Article for August is, "Securing a Child's Financial Future with Juvenile Life Insurance" by Chad Viminitz, CFP. "Juvenile life insurance complements RESPs nicely, bridging the gap where the RESP has the potential to fail."

Many young adults will be leaving home for the first time to attend school or go to work and they will have to learn money skills. Therefore, for September, the Feature Article topic is "Financial Tips for a Young Person Starting Out." For October, the topic is "Good Debt, Bad Debt and How to Tell the Difference." The due date for the September Feature Article submission is August 15 and for the October Feature, September 15.

How the Feature Article program works:

  1. FPSC requests articles on specific topics based on the recommendations of our editorial advisory committee.
  2. We call for two articles from 500 to 750 words in length in each E-Blast News (every two months).
  3. Submitted articles may be previously written but all submissions must be written by you.
  4. Articles should be submitted to Blake Glendenning at bglendenning@cfp-ca.org by the 15th of the month for consideration as the feature article for the following month.
  5. The advisory committee vets submissions by:
    • Determining if the articles are helpful to our website browsers:
      • Meets their information needs
      • Are timely
      • Are relevant
      • Demonstrates the breadth and depth of the knowledge and skills of CFP professionals
    • Deciding which article will be featured each month.
  6. All feature articles are posted on FPSC's website in a prominent position.
  7. Articles not selected as features but chosen for publication will be added to the appropriate Learning Centre section.
  8. FPSC awards a $500 cash prize to the author of each article selected for the Feature Article of the Month.

We're still looking for individuals, organizations and businesses to sponsor extra print runs of the printed version of the FPSC-developed Focus on Your Finances - A Financial Planning Tool Kit for Canadians Ages 15-25. In exchange for covering the cost of a print run, we'll print, "This printing of Focus on Your Finances sponsored by (your logo or name and contact information)." You will also receive a quantity of the booklets for your use and a portion of the print run will be used to cover class-set requests by teachers in schools across the country. For more information, contact Hilton, Public Relations Coordinator by e-mail at rhilton@cfp-ca.org.

Help FPSC to spread the word about your great career - financial planning. Human Resources Canada, Scotiabank Economists and Canadian Business Magazine have ranked financial planning as one of the top ten career choices until at least 2014! October 30 - November 5 is Canada Career Week, so why not volunteer to speak at your local school about your CFP credential and the benefits of being a financial planner? FPSC will support your initiative by providing a PowerPoint presentation, brochures, posters and poetry magnets for your school visit. To request materials, contact communications@cfp-ca.org. Please remember to include the school's name, mailing address, number of students and the date of your visit.

It is the responsibility of all CFP professionals to ensure their contact information and personal profile are accurate and up-to-date. Visit FPSC Online Services if you would like to update this information. Our database makes your business address the default address so if your home address rarely changes, make that your preferred address. This will help ensure you don't miss any important correspondence from FPSC.

Job site is FPSC's free online service designed to encourage employers to take the next step in their business planning and offer professional financial planning services through employees and representatives who are qualified to do so. Almost 600 positions have been advertised since January 2002.

To help evaluate the service, we sent a survey to 280 individuals who listed jobs from January 2002 to July 2005. Thirty six responded — thirty-three received 0-10 responses to their ad, five people were hired based on the Job site ad and thirty-one said they would use the service again.

Watch for the fall edition of FPSC Bulletin — it should be in your mailbox in early September. The 2004-2005 Annual Report will be included in the envelope along with the updated Code of Ethics and the final version of the Financial Planning Practice Standards. Here are some of the topics you will soon be reading about:

  • A message to stakeholders from FPSC President Don Johnston.
  • Interview with new FPSC Board Chair Margaret Koniuck.
  • FPSC's new advertising campaign.
  • And much more…

FPSC's new advertisements will appear in the following magazines in August and September.

  • Gardening Life (August/September)
  • Golf Canada

September

  • Canadian Home Workshop
