April 1st is April Fool's Day but this is no joke. It's the day the CFP Financial Planning Practice Standards become mandatory for all CFP professionals. The Practice Standards expand on, and provide clarity and guidance with respect to how the existing CFP Code of Ethics and the financial planning process apply to each and every financial planning engagement. They do not represent new ethical or professional obligations for CFP professionals. From the number of inquiries and discussions we've had with industry firms, both big and small, it is clear that most are moving forward with this initiative and are ready to take the next step in the evolution of the profession. Are you?

Visit the Practice Standards section of our website for more information and to view the Practice Standards Q&As. Questions can be e-mailed to standards@cfp-ca.org.

Financial Planners Standards Council is set to host the 2006 spring Financial Planning Standards Board (FPSB) Council Meeting, from April 4 to 7, 2006, in Vancouver, B.C. Representatives from the Certified Financial Planner™ certifying bodies in 17 countries worldwide will be in attendance along with observers from organizations in several other countries interested in FPSB membership.

FPSB was established in October 2004 by 17 non-profit associations that together have certified over 45,000 individuals outside the U.S. to use the CFP marks. FPSB purchased the CFP certification marks for use outside the U.S. from the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards in Denver. FPSB protects financial planning consumers and fosters professionalism in financial planning through the ongoing development and enforcement of relevant international competency and ethics standards. FPSB also promotes greater global recognition of CFP certification and its related marks as the international hallmarks of financial planning professionals.

Nothing resonates better with the public than feel-good stories. In the financial planning world, this could be a story of how your financial planning expertise made a positive contribution to a client in need.

They're your stories — and we would like to share them with others through our website, in media releases and through other ways. The stories we think will be of interest to many will be unique, as they all are, but resonate with relevance for many. Do you have a story where you made a substantial difference in a client's life, one that demonstrates your expertise and empathy? If so, tell us about it. Include the names and contact information of the clients involved so we can explore it a little further to develop an article or media pitch that will be enticing. Of course, we would not disclose the identity of the client in the final story — unless we received permission to do so.

Send your success stories to FPSC Communications at communications@cfp-ca.org.

CFP Ambassadors continued to put their best foot forward in media interviews during February and March. Some of the interviews have yet to appear in published articles — so watch for them.

Congratulations and thank you to all who help spread the word and inform Canadians about the many facets and benefits of financial planning.

Please continue to tell us of your participation in media interviews (outside of those we arrange) so we can acknowledge you and celebrate your success with your peers.

In May we are conducting a survey of CFP professionals to gain an in-depth understanding of the ways and extent to which you are engaged in the delivery of advisory of financial planning and other services. The survey will also identify the biggest challenges you face in running your business today, and the types of support, tools and services that you find most valuable in addressing these challenges.

This is a cooperative initiative with Credo Consulting Inc., a leading provider of consulting and specialized research services focusing on marketing and distribution trends in the financial services industry in Canada.

Your participation in this survey will entitle you to receive a complimentary analysis of the results and your name will be entered into a draw for a chance to win one of a number of great prizes.

Watch for the E-News Special in May!

We regularly track media coverage of FPSC and the CFP credential. Here is a summary of the media coverage for March 2005 to February 2006 as compared with the coverage for the same period the previous year.

The Feature Article for April is, "Tax Refund: Source of Pride or Missed Opportunity" by Donna Mitchell CFP. "Earning a refund means quite simply that you paid more than your share of income tax in the previous year. In effect, you lent money to the government…"

Tim Horton's Initial Public Offering (IPO) this past week has piqued public interest. For the May Feature Article, we are looking for articles that explain what an IPO is and the how's and why's of buying in.

For June we're calling for articles on insurance. There are different types of insurance products such as Critical Illness, Disability and Life so we are leaving the topic broad and will accept any articles related to insurance.

The due date for May Feature Article submissions is Friday, April 21 and for the June Feature, Monday, May 22. Submit articles to Blake Glendenning at bglendenning@cfp-ca.org.

Read the Feature Article submission guidelines.
