E-Blast News

October 25, 2002

FPSC has received many calls and e-mails from CFP professionals confused, and in many instances alarmed, by a recent correspondence from The Canadian Institute of Financial Planners (CIFPs), "a new association of CFP Professionals." While we are happy to speak with you and respond individually to each correspondence received, we understand that the voice of one often represents the beliefs and concerns of many. We therefore address all of you through this E-blast in the belief that all of you are happy to know:

THE CFP IS STRONGER THAN EVER!

Recognition of the CFP as the highest standard in financial planning is widespread in the industry and is gaining significant momentum in the marketplace and among regulators.

FPSC is grateful for the support of organizations and individuals expressing confidence in the CFP as the hallmark of financial planning professionalism. But we cannot always control how that support is expressed. Unfortunately, CIFPs statement warning, "Your CFP certification is at risk today" is unnecessarily alarming. This statement does not reflect the reality of the growing strength of your designation and FPSC's ability to continue to fulfill its responsibilities to you, the profession and the CFP marks.

FPSC remains the sole licensor of the CFP marks in Canada. We are, and continue to be, recognized as the leading organization developing and enforcing standards for the emerging financial planning profession. And because of our commitment to promoting and protecting the CFP marks, the financial planning profession is defined today and will be defined tomorrow by CFP professionals.

FPSC is encouraged by membership organizations wanting to assist existing and future licensees to be the best CFP professionals they can be. Such organizations can and do offer services and support that contribute significantly to the evolution of the profession. With their help and yours, FPSC will continue to lead the emerging financial planning profession as defined by the CFP in Canada and worldwide.

Thank you for your continued support.

Don Johnston
President
Financial Planners Standards Council
