CANADIAN TO CHAIR FINANCIAL PLANNING STANDARDS BOARD
IN ONGOING EFFORT TO INTERNATIONALIZE CFP MARKS
Toronto, January 23, 2003 — Financial Planning Standards Board Ltd. (FPSB), a Delaware-based corporation being formed to oversee the global development of CFP® certification, today announced John S. Carpenter of Calgary as its 2003 chair; Maureen M. Tsu, CFP, of California as its 2003 chair-elect; and Noel Maye of Colorado as its chief executive officer. These decisions were among several taken during the inaugural FPSB Board of Directors meeting on January 7-8 in Denver, Colorado, as part of ongoing efforts by the CFP Board of Standards, Inc. (CFP Board) and its 16 international affiliates to restructure the international CFP certification program.
"I am honoured to have been chosen to lead the Financial Planning Standards Board and to take CFP certification to its next stage of evolution internationally," said Carpenter. "With the capable support of Maureen, Noel and my fellow board members, and the commitment of 72,000 CFP licensees worldwide, FPSB will work to establish the CFP marks as a 'must-see' for global consumers seeking competent and ethical financial planners."
Carpenter is past-chair of CFP Board's Canadian affiliate, Financial Planners Standards Council (FPSC), and is currently executive director and CEO of Certified General Accountants Association of Alberta, a position he has held since 1995. Prior to his involvement with CGA, he spent 20 years with Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and earned his CGA designation in 1987. Carpenter served as a Canadian delegate to the International CFP Council from 2000-2002, chaired its Finance Committee from 2001-2002, and was a member of the CFP Board/International CFP Council joint task force working on international restructuring.
Don Johnston, president of FPSC and chair-elect of the advisory council to the new international entity says, "John has been instrumental to the success of the CFP certification program in Canada and will be a tremendous asset to the international board. We congratulate him and applaud his appointment."
Johnston adds, "The FPSB represents an international community that embraces financial planning's best practices globally, continually evolves and raises the standards in this dynamic profession and will establish CFP certification as the premium global designation for financial planning."
"FPSB's inaugural board meeting was the culmination of two years of intense effort by CFP Board and the International CFP Council to develop a structure to establish, maintain and enforce consistent standards for CFP certificants worldwide," noted Noel Maye. "While work remains to be done on structure, financing and operations, our board and staff are excited about establishing FPSB as a world-class standards-setting organization for financial planning."
Rounding out the nine-member FPSB Board of Directors are: Elaine E. Bedel, CFP, of Indiana; Joanne A. Bickel, CFP, of Connecticut; Louis J. Garday of Colorado,; Raymond Griffin, CFP, of Australia; S. Timothy Kochis, CFP, of California; Nicolas R.A. Koechlin, CFP, of Switzerland; and Ian A. Middleton, CFP, of South Africa.
