How to Make the Year of the Rat a Winner

Toronto, ON - February 7, 2008 It's the Year of the Rat — according to Chinese beliefs, a creature known for its wisdom and financial prudence. Whether you are a Rat or not, you can benefit from taking the steps Financial Planners Standards Council (FPSC) suggests may lead to the year of "sleeping better."

"Getting good financial guidance may be the best thing you can do to help make the Year of the Rat a prosperous one," says FPSC VP Communications and Corporate Relations Ann Bowman. "By taking a few simple steps, you can feel in better control of your financial affairs and be on track to meeting your life goals."

The Top Ten Resolutions for 2008 are posted on the FPSC website at the Learning Centre. In summary they are:

  1. Start your financial turnaround with a plan
  2. Increase your intake of high-quality advice with a CFP professional
  3. Schedule an appointment with your financial health expert annually
  4. Substitute unhealthy financial habits
  5. Don't get discouraged by the short-term results
  6. Cut down on "binge" investing
  7. Avoid the temptation to feast on easy credit
  8. Carry out your financial exercise regime with your partner
  9. Protect yourself while exercising your financial plan
  10. Don't procrastinate

Also on the website are resources to help inform consumers about a wide range of financial planning subjects (taxes, RRSPs, estate planning, etc.) and tips and resources to help Canadians take the next steps in 2008. Examples include:
