Mr. Cary List, CA, CFP, brings to the helm of Canada's leading authority and standard-setter for financial planning in Canada almost two decades of relevant experience and proven dedication to the advancement of the profession.
Prior to his appointment to President and CEO in April 2007, Cary was FPSC's Executive Vice-President - Standards and COO with responsibilities for the ongoing development and integrity of all aspects of CFP certification process. In this capacity, Cary oversaw major developments in CFP standards and evaluation, including the launch of the CFP Practice Standards in 2004 and the development of the ground-breaking CFP Professional Competency Profile in 2006. In 2007, Cary was the first non-American to be elected to the board of the National Association for Competency Assurance (NOCA), an organization dedicated to setting quality standards for credentialing organizations. He also has represented Canada on the financial planning Technical Committee to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) on matters concerning the development of international ISO guidelines for financial planning.
Before joining FPSC in June 2002, Cary was Director of the Centre for Financial Services Education at George Brown College in Toronto where he oversaw the development of the Centre and established its Bachelor of Applied Business in Financial Services, the first-ever government-approved baccalaureate degree program in any Ontario college. From 1998 to 2002 Cary sat on FPSC's volunteer Panel of Examiners, a standing Board committee that oversees the development of the CFP Examination in Canada.
In the 1990s Cary was employed in the private sector where he led the transition of a private financial services firm from a transaction-oriented business to a full-service financial planning firm and the successful start-up of a financial planning practice at Metro Credit Union (now Alterna Savings) in Toronto.
In addition to his professional credentials, Mr. List holds an honours degree in mathematics from the University of Waterloo.
